WFA Football Week Two Power Rankings
Angela Baker makes a move in Pittsburgh's win over Baltimore (Jeffrey Gamza Photography)
Week 1 is the beginning of a new season. It is a fresh start for all teams and a historic day for new teams. Week 2 however was the beginning of the fun that we expect in the Women’s Football Alliance. The WFA treated us with some offensive explosions, some upsets and some early season nail biters.
In our MyWSports Game of the Week, the #1 Pittsburgh Passion hosted the Baltimore Nighthawks. Baltimore was coming off a 59-19 win over the Keystone Assault in week 1 and the Passion topped the Columbus Comets 30-19. However, this wouldn’t be much of a game from the opening snap. Gabby O’Neil scored a 46 yard touchdown to start off the scoring. The Nighthawks would chip in a field goal to close the gap shortly thereafter. However the Passion would put another 42 points on the scoreboard to the Nighthawks 0 for the rest of the first half. The Passion rolled to a 67-17 win over Baltimore. With the win, the Passion set a team record with 358 rushing yards.
Around the League
The Boston Renegades got their first win of the season with a 41-6 thumping of the Philadelphia Phantomz. The New York Sharks hosted the two time defending champion DC Divas and played in the best game of 2017. The Divas would lead the contest 21-0, but the Sharks battled back and with a few more minutes could have turned this game into a monumental upset!
The Chicago Force got the season started with a bang, an 84-0 bang over the Detroit Dark Angels. The Miami Fury started turning heads right away with their 24-21 loss to the Tampa Bay Inferno. Although they are 0-1, the competitiveness with a team like Tampa Bay bodes well for the Fury. The Austin Outlaws won a thrilling 46-42 game over the Acadiana Zydeco, making up for their week 1 no show against the Dallas Elite. The Seattle Majestics topped the Portland Shockwave 24-21 in another incredible game.
The MyWSports Player of the Week goes to Kia Foster of the Pittsburgh Passion with her 156 yard and 2 touchdown effort against the Baltimore Nighthawks.
The MyWSports Game of the Week to Watch: Week 3 only has 15 games on slate, but there are many games that could be great. One in particular that catches our eyes is between two of the newest members of the WFA when the Montreal Blitz head south of the border to take on the New York Sharks. These two teams have played multiple epic IWFL battles in previous years and it’s finally time to see the WFA version of this rivalry.
