Morgan Fritz-Ward of the New York Riveters Retires (NWHL)

NEW YORK, NY - This morning, New York Riveters forward, Morgan Fritz-Ward announced her retirement from professional hockey. Fritz-Ward will play her final two games in a Riveters jersey this weekend when New York host the Buffalo Beauts on Saturday and the Boston Pride on Sunday.

“This was no easy decision, as hockey has been my life since I was ten years old, but I have decided to get back on track with school, which I will be attending in January. I am truly blessed for having had the opportunity to do what I love for over a year. Thank you all again for the support and dedication you have given to me and the league.”

A few weeks ago the NWHL announced player salary cuts to sustain the longevity of the league. As players continue to look for ways to survive on the 65% pay cut from the league, others have decided to look for other opportunities. Fritz-Ward is the first to announce her departure from the league and may be an indication of others to come.

At 23, the Riveters assistant captain will retire after just over a year of professional play since graduating from Quinnipiac University.

“To all my friends in Riveters Nation, I have made the decision that it is time to end my hockey career and start on my new, personal career,” said Fritz-Ward. “I want to thank the league for everything they have ever done for me and allowing me to live out my life-long dream, my teammates for being some of the greatest people I have ever met and also supporting me, and the fans who have made and continue to make this league possible and so enjoyable!"

This is definitely a tough loss for the Riveters who are currently in second place going into the weekend. Catch the final games of Morgans career at the Hockey House in Newark, New Jersey or on Youtube.com/NWHL
