CHESTER, PA - It's going to be a long time before we see the U.S Women's national team back in a major competition, three years to be exact. The next World Cup won't be until 2019 in France, followed by the Tokyo Olympics in 2020. On Wednesday night, team USA took the field in the second annual SheBelieves Cup. The round robin tournament is a week long competition this year featuring four of the five top ranked teams in the world.
Alyssa Naeher made some big saves throughout the contest including a diving save early in the match to keep Germany off of the scoreboard and earned a shutout. After a scoreless first half, USA found their break in the 56th minute. Christen Press pinged a rocket off the crossbar, the rebound went right to Tobin Heath whose shot was blocked but right to Lynn Williams who did not miss the third chance for the Americans.
Williams scored her second career goal and is giving head coach, Jill Ellis a good reason to continue to keep her on the roster. Williams recently led the Western New York Flash (now North Carolina Courage) to a NWSL Championship last season and has been on a tare since.
The competition continues on Saturday when USA will take on England at Red Bull Arena in New Jersey. The final game of the SheBelieves Cup will be on Tuesday in Washington D.C's RFK Stadium.
