Boston College Eagles Comeback to Win Beanpot Championship.
Boston College has won three of the last four Beanpot Championships (BC Athletics)
Boston, MA - The Boston College Eagles are back to back Beanpot Champions, after erasing a third period deficit against Northeastern in the Beanpot Championship to earn a 2-1 victory. The Eagles got goals from Kristyn Capizzano and redshirt freshman, Erin Connolly to help propel Boston College to it's seventh Beanpot in program history. Katie Burt gave up an early third period goal but quickly rebounded and stifled the Northeastern offense the rest of the way.
In the first period, the Eagles and Huskies exchanged quality opportunities but could not find the back of the net. Boston College took two penalties in the first, giving Northeastern an opportunity to take advantage. The nations second best special teams unit lived up to the hype and kept the Huskies to only one shot on the two chances. Things got a little physical at the end of the first and both teams were assessed matching minors to start the second period.
Coach Katie King Crawley must've said some things in the locker room during the first intermission to motivate her players as Boston College dominated the second period. Although no goals were scored, the Eagles outshot the Huskies 11-4 and were clearly in control during the second period. The BC defense made 14 blocks through the first 40 minutes and five of those belonged to Megan Keller who is having quiet the season. Hayley Scamurra led the charge for the Huskies with two shots on net but could not solve the brick wall of Katie Burt.
The Huskies changed that in the third period when just 1:07 into the frame, Kasidy Anderson got a great pass that set her up for a one on one against Burt. Keller trailing the play tried to make a play on the puck but could not get to Anderson in time before she beat Burt top shelf to give Northeastern a 1-0 lead. Seven minutes later, Capizzano just stepping onto the ice received a long pass from Caitrin Lonergan giving Capizzano a one on one chance with Bugalski. Kristyn scored the tying goal and gave the Eagles a much needed spark in the third. Just a few minutes later, Boston College was awarded a power play and the Eagles capitalized. Freshman, Erin Connolly buried home the power play goal for her seventh goal of the season.
The Eagles defense buckled down following the go ahead goal and Burt was just superb in net. The junior stopped 19 shots and some of which should have been on Sportscenter Top 10. Burt improves her career record to 84-7-7 with three of those losses coming this season. The BB&N product is closing the gap for the All-time career wins record.
The Eagles claimed their seventh Beanpot championship in program history and have now won three of the last four. The Eagles improve the nations longest unbeaten run to 17 going 14-0-3 in that span.
