Americans Shine in the Bahamas, Lincicome Wins Pure Silk Championship
Brittany Lincicome wins 2017 Pure Silk Bahamas Championship
Paradise Island, Bahamas - In the first tournament of the LPGA Season, Brittany Lincicome battled fellow American, Lexi Thompson in a playoff for the seasons first championship. Lincicome also had to deal with on and off down pours and wind gust that picked up to almost 40mph. Thompson hit her third straight par on 18 forcing a playoff for the tournament title.
"I was thinking that I was very lucky,'' Lincicome said. "Obviously, the last three or four holes for all of us was really unfortunate. It was gusting. The par 3 that we played, I was just trying to hit it on the front of the green and I took three extra clubs. It was blowing almost 35 miles an hour into, and when it started pouring I was already done, so I was feeling blessed that I was already done and didn't have to compete with the elements. So, for Lexi to make par on 18 with those conditions is pretty awesome.''
In the playoff on 18, Lincicome launched a shot which landed 20 feet away from the hole and tapped in for birdie. Thompson could not match the score giving missing a 15 foot birdie opportunity. Lincicome wins her seventh LPGA Tour championship and first since the ANA Inspiration in 2015. She is the first American to win on Tour in the last 14 events.
Behind Brittany followed a bunch of Americans who are looking to make a name for themselves on Tour this year. Stacy Lewis finished third and Gerina Piller fourth, both players were in the top three until the final round where both shot a 71, their worst rounds of the tournament. Nelly Korda rounded out the top five for the Americans with a -21 on the event. In all six out of the top 10 leaders at the Pure Silk tournament were from the U.S.
Keep your eyes peeled as the season progresses, should be a fun year to watch.
