Australian Open 2017 Starts WTA Season
Angelique Kerber Hoists 2016 Aussie Open Championship.
Dear Tennis,
Welcome Back!
The best tennis players in the world have made there way to Melbourne, Australia, where they’ll compete in the first Grand Slam of the year at the Australian Open. Angelique Kerber is looking to defend her singles title from the 2016 season but it won't be an easy road. So, before the tournament begins Sunday night for us in the Americas let’s take a look at a few BOLD predictions for the Australian Open.
WHO TO WATCH FOR:
Okay I am a lover of Tennis, you might look a me funny when I say Shelby Rogers is my surprise pick for the tournament. Now I'm not saying she will win it all (YOU'LL SEE WHO I CHOSE LATER) but Rogers made a phenomenal run to the 2016 French Open quarterfinals. She is a talented player who can dominate the court. She has a tough matchup in round one with #4 Simona Halep but Halep has struggled in Grand Slams so watch out for Shelby Rogers.
THE ROAD LESS TRAVELED:
Serena Williams’ next Grand Slam would be her 23rd, which would move her past Steffi Graf on the all-time list. However it will be no easy road for Serena who plays Belinda Bencic in the first round and if you have seen Bencic since last year she has improved a great deal. Serena also has three top 20 players in her quarter of the bracket. If Serena gets #23 it will be through one of the toughest brackets she has ever faced.
WINNER:
Serena will have a lot of pressure in her quest to #23 but Williams should be in contention, she’s still one of the top contenders on the women’s side although Kerber is coming off an amazing 2016 season with Grand Slam titles at the Australian Open and U.S. Open. Kerber did struggle in tournaments leading up to the Aussie Open but she will make a run. My pick has to be Serena Williams. On her quest to becoming the best athlete ever a win at the Aussie Open for Williams will solidify her not only as a Tennis great but one of the most dominating players of all time.
