Dominika Cibulkova Stuns Angelique Kerber in WTA Finals

SINGAPORE – Dominika Cibulkova lost two of her first three matches at the BNP Paribas WTA Finals in Singapore, including a three set contest against world #1 Angelique Kerber. However, Cibulkova earned a spot in the semifinals and came back to defeat Svetlana Kuznetsova in three sets for a shot at redemption against Kerber in the finals.

Cibulkova dominated throughout the first set, her groundstrokes from the baseline overpowered Kerber and her first serve was remarkable. She earned every bit of the 6-3, 6-4 straight set sweep in what was the biggest performance of her career and in doing so upset the world’s best player.

In the final set on match point, Cibulkova hit a power shot that hit the tape and landed on Kerber’s side of the court. The win propelled Dominika to a career high #5 ranking to end the season. She now has eight career tournament wins and is currently eight wins away from 400 in her career.
