Women's Football Alliance Final Top 10

WFA Final Top 10

DC Divas become back to back champions, claim W Bowl I

1. DC Divas

It should be no surprise that the Back to Back champion DC Divas finish the 2016 Women’s Football Alliance as the top team in the rankings. The Divas bounced back from a 40-19 loss in the first game of the season, to win every game after and take home their 3rd overall national championship. The Divas played the best of the best all season and came away with close wins against Boston, Chicago, and Dallas in the W Bowl. DC finished with the 4th best offense and the 2nd best defense. This is even more impressive with the schedule they played throughout the season. It was the offense that defeated the Renegades with just 17 seconds remaining in the game and the defense that held Chicago out of the end zone with 10 seconds remaining in the game.

2. Dallas Elite

Dallas pushed the Divas to the limit for the second year in a row in the championship game. The Elite finished the season with the top ranked offense and top ranked defense. The Elite were challenged in the American Conference Championship by the War Angels, but other than the final two games, they steamrolled through the season. Dallas will return stronger next year with double the amount of revenge on their minds.

3. Boston Renegades

We may always wonder what if with this year’s Boston Renegades. What if they had beaten DC in Week 2? What if Allison Cahill had stayed health? What if they hadn’t knocked off the Chicago Force in the playoffs? Football is full of ‘what ifs,’ but expect the Renegades to come back even stronger next year. They know they were 1 half away from the Championship and when they regain the winningest Quarterback in women’s football history, they will be a force to be reckoned.

4. Chicago Force

Speaking of Forces, the second best offense in the country belonged to the Chicago Force. Like Boston, Chicago was also seconds away from defeating the Divas in the regular season. Unfortunately, they were unable to score in the biggest game of the year against the Renegades to put them into another battle with DC. Chicago has some great pieces to continue to build with, including their Quarterback Rasan Gore and their defense, which ranked third. In 2017, they will have to find ways to win the close games to get back to their championship days of 2013.

5. Central Cal War Angels

The Central Cal War Angels was the best team west of the Rockies this year. The War Angels boasted the 3rd ranked offense and the 4th ranked defense. However, the War Angels may need to look outside the division to improve their schedule and face stronger competition in the regular season before they are ready to beat the Dallas Elite in the American Conference. The War Angels are definitely an improved football team and we’ll see if they can continue their climb in 2017.

6. Portland Fighting Shockwave

The Portland Fighting Shockwave finished the regular season undefeated. They are a solid team that took care of competition in the Northwest. Their regular season competition was even weaker than that of the War Angels and they definitely need to set up regular season games with Pacific or Central Cal to help them move to the next level. However, this was a great step in the right direction for a team made up of two teams combining just last season.

7. St. Louis Slam

The St. Louis Slam became the Tier II Champions with a dominating, 38-7, win over the Tampa Bay Inferno. The Slam played a strong schedule, taking on the Kansas City Titans twice and the Chicago Force. St. Louis’ offense got better from week to week during their 6 game win streak to end the season, including averaging 45 points per game in the playoffs.

8. Pittsburgh Passion

The Pittsburgh Passion joined the WFA this season and came out on fire. The Passion had the 5th best offense this season, averaging 44.8 points per game. The defense will need to improve for the Passion in 2017 if they want to compete with DC, Dallas, and Boston. The Central North Division didn’t do much to prepare Pittsburgh for the playoffs, so a tougher schedule could be good for the Passion as well.

9. Kansas City

Kansas City seemed to be on a roll early in the season, however a Memorial Weekend loss to rival St. Louis and a crushing defeat to Dallas to end the season brought the Titans back down to earth. Kansas City scored the most points allowed by the Elite during the regular season, showing they have the offense to play with the best, but they were unable slow the top offenses that they played.

10. Tampa Bay Inferno

Tampa Bay rolled through the regular season undefeated. As we’ve seen in years past, undefeated in the South Atlantic Division, doesn’t always mean an easy road to the championship. The Inferno played a great postseason this year, knocking off Alabama and Philadelphia, before eventually losing in the Tier II Championship to St. Louis. Tampa Bay needs to improve their offense to be able to compete with the top teams in the playoffs.

WFA Outlook for 2017 and Beyond

A sustainable league that is going to continue to grow needs tradition. The WFA started that tradition this year with the W Bowl and this is an amazing step to allow fans to follow the history of the WFA better. Fans of the WFA were treated to a little bit of tradition in the first W Bowl as well, with a championship rematch, between Dallas and DC.

The talent in the WFA has continued to grow every year. While perennial powerhouses like DC and Boston have continued to grow, strong new teams are making their presence known in the league like Dallas and Portland. The tier system has allowed other teams to be champions that aren’t on the same level as DC and Dallas. Maybe the next move in scheduling would be to eliminate divisions and just solely go by the tier system, forcing teams to play stronger schedules.

Obviously money will be an issue until the league can secure sponsors and TV contracts for the league as a whole. For now, it is imperative that fans and media continue to spread the word about this great league and the stars that make it up. If you know any great female athletes, point them in the direction and encourage them to write their names in the history books of the Women’s Football Alliance.
