2016 Rio Olympics Day Two Recap

If Day one was any indication of how exciting these Olympics games will be Day two was the icing on the cake. From a road race in cycling which saw some dramatics to the upset of Venus and Serena Williams being dealt their first ever Olympic loss together in doubles.

USA defeats Senegal in Opening Play (@USABasketball/Twitter)
USA 121 Senegal 56
Team USA jumped out to a 35-9 lead after the first quarter and never looked back. Diana Taurasi, Sylvia Fowles and Breanna Stewart all had 15 points to lead the way for the United States who won 121-56 to open play in Group B. The defense was solid as well, forcing 27 turnovers and grabbing 32 boards in the contest.
USA will play Spain on Monday (8/8) at 11am EST

Lauren Fendrick & Brooke Sweat (USA)
Americans Fendrick and Sweat took the first set, 21-14, in their opening match if the Rio Olympics but would run into a gritty duo from Poland in Brostek and Kolosinska. In the second set the Monika and Kinga battled back to tack the set, 21-13, forcing a deciding third set. Fendrick and Sweat could not get hold off the momentum going into the third, and the team from Poland takes the win in this opening match in pool play.

Mara Abbott Rides to Fourth in Road Race

Anna van der Breggen (NED) – Gold
Emma Johansson (SWE) – Silver Elisa Longo Borghini (ITA) – Bronze
American Mara Abbott took the lead following a crash that sent Netherlands Cyclist, Annemiek van Vleuten, to the hospital and taking her out of first place. Abbott with under 3km left in the race continued to peddle down the straight away in hopes of widening the gap between her and a pack of three chasing her. Unfortuntely with under a kilometer left, Breggen, Johansson and Longo cut the gaps and surpassed the tired American Cyclist. Abbott finished fourth.

USA Earns first in Team competition qualifications by almost 10 points (@USAGym/Twitter)
Team USA did what the world expected, earned first for the all-around final. All 16 routines were done with ease and by the end of the subdivision performance USA had a team qualifying score of 185.238. Nearly 10 points more than the second place team China. Simone Biles and Aly Raisman qualified for all-around final while Gabby Douglas was left out from final although having third best score. Per rule only two individuals from the same team can qualify for all-around final.

Quaterfinals – New Zealand defeats USA 5-0
After earning a draw against Australia in the last match of pool play, Team USA could not get past a tough New Zealand team dropping the decision 5-0. The loss takes the USA out of medal contention but has grown a tremendous interest in the sport from fans all over the world.
