2016 Rio Olympics Day One Recap

The 2016 Rio Olympics are officially underway and following the opening ceremony on Friday night, Day one in Rio saw a cavalcade of sports take place throughout Saturday. From disappointing upsets to incredible finishes, fans across the world played witness to what makes the Olympics so captivating.
Team USA had a busy first day and should be happy with their current standing in the medal count, with one goal and four silver being earned all in the first day of action leaves USA is atop the medal list with five!

Walsh and Ross (USA) earn first win in Rio (@USAVolleyball/Twitter)
Prelims Pool C - Kerri Walsh Jennings & April Ross (USA) def. Mariafe Artacho del Solar & Nicole Laird 2-0 (21-14, 21-13). Kerri Walsh Jennings returned to Rio for anther shot at Gold this time with new partner, April Ross. The duo took to the sand for their opening match against Mariafe Artacho del Solar and Nicole Laird Saturday night and won in straight sets.

Michelle Kasold and Katie Rinprecht score to help guide USA to win. Goalkeeper Jackie Briggs was great in net for the US as they move atop pool B with upset win over.

Single Sculls Heat – Gevvie Stone 8:29:67 first in Heat 2
Double Sculls Heat – Meghan O’Leary and Ellen Tomek fail to qualify
Quadruple Sculls Heat – USA Finishes second to last
Gevvie Stone becomes only American to move on in Rowing on day one, Stone finished first in Heat 2 of the Single Sculls to earn a shot at a medal in the finals.

Prelim Pool A – USA def. Colombia 48-0
In their first Olympic competition, USA suffered a tough loss to Fiji 12-7 but found their stride in second match of the day against Colombia. The win is the first ever for USA Rugby in Olympic competition.

Virginia “Ginny” Thrasher became the first Gold medalist of Olympics by shooting a 10.4 on her final shot to win by one point in 10m Air Rifle competition.
Soccer:
USA Defeats France 1-0 behind Carli Lloyds Goal (USA Womens Soccer/Twitter)
Prelim Group G – USA def. France 1-0
Carli Lloyd yet again finds the back of the net to lead USA to 1-0 victory. Hope Solo kept France off the scoresheet with spectacular saves. Solo earned her 200th cap and now has over 100 shutouts in international competition.

Volleyball:
USA dominates Puerto Rico in Opening Match (@USAVolleyball/Twitter)
Prelims Pool B – USA def. Puerto Rico 3-0
USA holds off a gritty Puerto Rican team to sweep opening match 3-0. Kim Hill and Kelly Murphy each notch 14points in win. Blocking was a huge part of the game plan against PR, USA averaged 3.33 blocks in the match.
