Serena Williams Ties Steffi Graf, Claims 7th Wimbledon Title

Serena Claims 2016 Wimbledon Championship

In 1999, a young Serena Williams shocked the world when she defeated Martina Hingis in straight sets at the U.S Open. It would be the first Grand Slam of her career and as we now know not the last. After three consecutive Grand Slam Final losses, Serena held off Angelique Kerber 7-5, 6-3 to claim the 2016 Wimbledon Championship tying Steffi Graf for most all time with 22.

In a high-quality match, Williams and Kerber held serve throughout the first set and challenged each other from the baseline. In the 2016 Australian Open, Kerber had broken Serena's serve five times, but today struggled to keep pace with the best server in history. Serena would hit eight aces, and get 88% of her first serves in. Serena also never faced a break point in the first set. At 6-5, Serena earned the first break on Kerbers serve and took the first set 7-5.

Kerber stayed focus on the game plan against Serena and continued to find a way to stay in the match. The second began with both players holding serve until 3-3 when Serena faced her first break point down 30-40. Serena would use two aces and a winner on the third point to hold serve and take the 4-3 lead. Kerber would make a few mistakes in the next game and allowed Serena to break serve and take a 5-3 lead.

Serena in the most dominating fashion hit three serves all of which Kerber could barely return taking a 40-0 lead. The serve was her best shot all day and won the Championship for her. Serena's win would tie her for most Wimbledon titles with Steffi Graf at seven and most Grand Slam Championships with 22.
