WFA Top 10 Power Rankings Week 9
Pittsburgh looking to clinch first round bye in Playoffs this week against Chicago (Passion/FB)
Week 9 in the Women’s Football Alliance was full of blowouts. Unfortunately with many teams taking the Memorial Day Holiday weekend off, there weren’t many games to be had either. However, the Arlington Impact and Austin Outlaws played to a flashing 22-21 finish. Down 13-8 at halftime, the Outlaws extended the lead to 20-8 early in the third quarter. The Impact would make a second half comeback scoring two unanswered touchdowns to take a 22-21 lead with 12:54 to go in the 4th quarter. Unfortunately, lightning strikes came in quickly and the game was called due to lightning. We will call Week 9 “The calm before the storm” as Week 10 is jam packed with potentially great contests.
The Women’s Football Alliance playoffs are around the corner. With one week remaining, there are many interesting matchups in Week 10 that will have playoff implications. If the playoffs were to be today, we would get an I-70 rematch between St. Louis and Kansas City and a Pennsylvania battle between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. Boston would still squeak in with their tough end of year, however would face the undefeated Tampa Bay Inferno.
However before the WFA can get to the playoffs, there are 7 huge matchups that have playoff implications:
Boston Renegades @ DC Divas – With the loss of Quarterback Allison Cahill, the Renegades weren’t able to muster any offense in the second half in a 58-14 loss to Chicago. The Divas narrowly defeated Boston in their last meeting, scoring a touchdown in the final 17 seconds. However, without Cahill, the question in this game is if Boston can stay in the Playoff hunt with their 3rd loss.
Philadelphia Phantomz @ Keystone Assault – This game has implications in both playoff brackets, as the Phantomz are currently the 5th seed in the National Conference and the Assault would be the 4th seed in the WFA III bracket. With the Boston loss to the Divas, can the Phantomz move up in the seedings and can Keystone secure their spot in the playoffs?
Pittsburgh Passion @ Chicago Force – The Passion have had a great first season back in the WFA, however Chicago has been a dominant Force on offense. Both teams are currently in the playoff hunt and we would expect win or lose, both teams will stay in the hunt. This could be a good warm up for the Passion heading into the playoffs against strong offensive teams like Chicago and DC.
West Michigan Mayhem @ Kansas City Titans – Kansas City lost a 32-0 game to the St Louis in Week 9 and is currently set up for a playoff rematch. The Titans had been on a roll prior to the game with their only loss on the season to the top ranked Dallas Elite and they should get back on that roll against the Mayhem who are 3-3. A Kansas City win would guarantee another I-70 matchup with the Slam.
Jacksonville Dixie Blues @ Tampa Bay Inferno – Tampa Bay is undefeated, but due to the Massey Ratings, the Inferno hold the 6th seed. In Week 3 the Inferno beat the Dixie Blues 45-27, with Boston’s future in question, Tampa Bay could take advantage and move up in the seedings with another win over Jacksonville. Although Tampa Bay’s strength of schedule is the weakest of any of the National Conference playoff teams, they did beat an Atlanta Phoenix team that averaged 35 points per game this season, 17-14.
Portland Fighting Shockwave @ Seattle Majestics – The Fighting Shockwave will try to remain undefeated this weekend as they head to Seattle to play the Majestics. Portland defeated Seattle 40-0 early in the season and with the win will secure a spot in the playoffs. Seattle could claw their way in with a win. The loser of this matchup may need to keep their eyes on the MyWSports Twitter account because the Pacific @ Central Cal matchup could determine who gets the third spot in the Pacific bracket of the playoffs.
The MyWSports Game of the Week to Watch: Pacific Warriors @ Central Cal War Angels – In Week 2 the War Angles topped the Warriors 37-14. Currently the War Angels hold the top seed and the Warriors are in the 3rd seed. The Warriors would love to knock off the War Angels and send a message prior to the playoffs. The Warriors may still be able to make the playoffs with a loss as they rank 8th in the Massey Ratings and Seattle who is behind them in the Pacific Region is 15th overall and playing a lower ranked opponent.
The MyWSports Player of the Week goes to the St Louis Slam’s Running Back Taylor Hay who ran the ball 21 times for 88 yards, a touchdown, and 4 for 4 kicking extra points.
