Montreal Blitz defeat Washington Prodigy 24-7 (MontrealBlitz/Facebook)
A few weeks remain in the Independent Women’s Football League regular season and as we inch closer to the end we will start focusing more on the teams possibly making the playoffs. This past weekend we saw 12 games with some marquee match ups taking place in two conferences. In the Atlantic division the Washington Prodigy traveled across the border to take on the Montreal Blitz. Both teams came in with some of the best defenses in the league. Washington for their part held NY(6-0) and Carolina(6-0) to a combined 18 points. Unfortunately the travel and physicality of the previous games might’ve taken its toll on the Prodigy, the Blitz put together a complete game a won 24-7. In the Central division the Woodland Wildcats held off a tough Houston Energy team in a 48-30 victory in Houston. Woodland has been consistent all year and with just one loss to division leader the Austin Yellow Jackets back in week 4.
The top teams continue to play well against lower tier opponents this season. The Yellow Jackets shutout the Tulsa Threat 54-0 while the Utah Falconz put up 80 points in a shutout of their own. New York went down to Baltimore and continued their impressive start to the season.
Week 9 brings the least amount of games this season since week 1, with only 8 games on the schedule; most of the top teams are on a bye. This week there will be some playoff implications on the line so check out MyWSports for the latest.
The MyWSports Player of the Week goes to Maude Lacasse of the Montreal Blitz (6-2). The Blitz defeated the Washington Prodigy 24-7 last weekend behind the Lacasse. Through eight games this season Maude has 849 passing yards, 18 Touchdowns and she is 22 of 27 from PAT's. The Blitz two losses have come at the hands of the New York Sharks but no other team has seemed to figure them out. Montreal is on a bye this week.
The MyWSports Game of the Week is the North County Stars (4-2) traveling to Phoenix to take on the Phantomz (2-3). North County has played very well against some quality teams and their losses have come from same opponent in the undefeated Carson Bobcats. Phoenix has struggled against a similar opponent in Carson but looking at the schedule it might be the toughest in the IWFL. A win against NC will give them momentum going into the latter half of the season and if a playoff game is in their future, it will have to start this weekend against the Stars.
