When the NCAA women's basketball tournament kicks off tomorrow, there are going to be plenty of great college players waiting to make the tournament apart of their everlasting memories. With so many good college players out there, the top 25 listed below includes names you may not have heard of, or smaller school stars who aren't as well known as some other big names. Whether you are just watching the tournament for the first time, or a long time fan, I hope you all enjoy the list of the 25 players to watch in reverse order.
25) Kelsey Minato, G, Army
Kelsey Minato is one of the top senior guards to watch in the NCAA tournament. She averages 23.6ppg, 4.5rpg and 3.7apg. She is a dynamic scorer who, the Army West Point, will need if they want to advance past the first round against a tough Syracuse team.
24) Jonquel Jones, F, George Washington
Jonquel Jones is the primary reason why George Washington had a successful season, leading her team to win the A-10 tournament and overall 8 seed in the tournament. She missed some time during this season with an injury yet she still averaged 16ppg and 14.7rpg. If George Washington wants to make noise, Jonquel Jones will be the reason why, Watch out Kansas State!
23) Jasmon Gwathmey, G, James Madison
James Madison has done well competing in the CAA and the conference tournament partly because of red shirt senior Jasmon Gwathmey. She averages 20.1ppg and 6.1rpg and she will be vital if JMU wants to have success in the tournament this year.
22) Bria Holmes, West Virginia University
West Virginia University had a good season and could make that season even better if their top player senior guard Bria Holmes comes to play. She averages 16.4ppg and 4.2rpg and will be called upon to deliver WVU past the second round, but beware a tough Princeton Tigers team is lurking in the first round contest.
21) Alexis Peterson, G, Syracuse
Syracuse had a wonderful season and would like to keep it going in the tournament but they're going to need junior point guard Alexis Peterson to do it. She averages 14.9ppg and 4.8apg and the Orange need every contribution from her as well as her teammate Brianna Butler in order to advance.
20) Shereesha Richards, F, Albany
Albany had a magical regular season and an incredible conference tournament. Senior guard Shereesha Richards also had a great season. She averaged 23.7ppg and 8.5rpg and if Albany wants to make history and upset Florida, Shereesha Richards will be the reason why.
19) A'ja Wilson, F, South Carolina
One of the big stars of the powerhouse South Carolina team is sophomore forward A'ja Wilson. She averaged 16.4ppg and 8.7rpg and helped lead her team to win the SEC tournament title. If South Carolina wins the title, it will be because of A'ja Wilson's ability to play big inside.
18) Courtney Walker, F, Texas A&M
Texas A&M has a had a slightly disappointing season so far as they were expected to be a bit better this year and haven't played up to their potential. They could change all of that come tournament time and they're going to need one of their three big stars to play well. That would be senior forward Courtney Walker who averages 18.1ppg and 5.5rpg. Texas A&M could turn around their season if Courtney Walker has a huge impact in her last tournament appearance.
17) Courtney Williams, G, South Florida
South Florida has had a great season thanks in large part of the play of their senior guard Courtney Williams. South Florida's losses came against UCONN and they could have a good shot at reaching the Sweet 16. Courtney Williams averaged 22.0ppg and 8.5rpg and she's going to have to elevate her game even more to bring USF into the Sweet 16.
16) Erica McCall, F, Stanford
Stanford has usually been a dominant powerhouse but has not had the same success recently. That could all change with the emergence of their junior star forward Erica McCall. She averages nearly a double-double with 14.3ppg and 9.3rpg and she could be why Stanford could be back in the Elite 8.
15) Ruth Hamblin, C, Oregon State
Oregon State had a remarkable season and conference tournament. This was in large part due to the defense and senior center Ruth Hamblin was the anchor of it. Up until this point, there have been mainly offensive minded players on the list, but Ruth Hamblin makes the list of top players because other players have had a hard time scoring in the paint due to her presence. She averaged 11.9ppg and 9.5rpg and if Oregon State wants to make it past the Sweet 16, they will need her to continue her defensive play.
14) Jamie Weisner, G, Oregon State
Another player who helped Oregon State to win the regular season as well as the Pac-12 tournament is senior guard Jamie Weisner. The senior guard who was Pac-12 POY as well as conference tournament POY averages 17.3ppg and 5.5 rpg and Oregon State will need her scoring contributions as well if they're going to go past the Sweet 16 stage. They have some tough possible matchups in Oklahoma State and Louisville.
13) Jordin Canada, G, UCLA
UCLA has had a great season so far partly because of the play of sophomore guard Jordin Canada. She and senior guard Nirra Fields helped lead the team to the title game of the Pac-12 tournament. Jordin Canada averaged 16.1ppg and 3.9apg while taking extremely good care of not turning the ball over. UCLA can make waves in the tournament and Jordin Canada will ultimately be the reason why.
12) Victoria Vivians, G, Mississippi State
One of the most exciting and rising stars in college basketball comes from Mississipi State and her name is Victoria Vivians. The sophomore guard is a star who helped lead her team to the title game of the SEC tournament. She averaged 17.2ppg and 5.9rpg and Miss State is going to need her to play big if they want to go far in the tournament.
11) Brionna Jones, C, Maryland
Maryland had a dominant season not only in the Big Ten conference, but overall as well. Brionna Jones was one of the key reasons why. The sophomore center was a double double machine and averaged 16.1ppg and 10.4rpg and if Maryland goes back to the Final Four, it will be because of Brionna Jones play.
10) Myisha Hines – Allen, F, Louisville
Louisville had yet another good season and Myisha Hines-Allen was named the ACC Player of the Year and the sophomore forward continues to get better as she averaged 17.5ppg and 8.4rbg. She's another rising star in college basketball and Louisville is going to need her if they want a shot at the Final Four.
9) Brianna Turner, F, Notre Dame
The star of a dominant Notre Dame women's basketball team is none other than sophomore forward Brianna Turner. Despite missing some time with an injury, she still was effective both offensively and defensively and averaged 14.3ppg and 7.3rpg. If Notre Dame wins the national title, it will be because of Brianna Turner's efforts.
8) Shatori Walker – Kimbrough, G, Maryland
Another key player who was instrumental in Maryland's dominant season was junior guard Shatori Walker-Kimbrough. She averaged 19.5ppg and 5.8apg and helped her team win the Big Ten conference title. Maryland is going to need their star if they want go to the national title game.
7) Nina Davis, F, Baylor
Baylor continues to be one of the dominant teams in the nation year after year even after their top players graduate. One of the reasons why is because the new players become better as well. Nina Davis fits the description of those said players. The junior forward is averaging 15.6ppg and 6.1rpg and Baylor is going to need Davis to step up if they want to go to the Final Four.
6) Tiffany Mitchell, G, South Carolina
South Carolina continues to roll on after an undefeated season in the SEC and by winning the SEC tournament thanks in large part to senior point guard's Tiffany Mitchell play. She was named the MVP and the Gamecocks will need their senior star to play well if they want to win the national title.
5) Aerial Powers, F, Michigan State
Michigan State is a team that is playing well and is a threat to become one of the Elite 8 teams after they reached the title game of the Big Ten tournament. Their star player Aerial Powers was tremendous in the Big Ten tournament and the red shirt junior forward averaged 21.9ppg and 9.2rpg. She is in the top 5 to watch because of her ability to impact games.
4) Kelsey Mitchell, G, Ohio State
Ohio State had somewhat of a disappointing end to their regular season and conference tournament. They could change all of that if they play well in the NCAA tournament and they're going to need their sophomore, scoring star Kelsey Mitchell to do it. She averaged 25.7ppg, one of the highest scoring averages in the nation. Scoring is what she does and she does it incredibly well and that is why she is among the top 5 to watch in the tournament.
3) Kelsey Plum, G, Washington
Washington has had a good year and the big reason why is because of the play of junior guard Kelsey Plum. Kelsey Plum reached 2000 points earlier in the season as a junior and will look to continue her scoring ways in the tournament. She averaged 26.2ppg, among the top scoring leaders in the country. Not only does she score, her ability to set up her teammates makes her dynamic on offense. She is in the top 5 to watch because of her ability to impact the game offensively.
2) Moriah Jefferson, G, UCONN
Most of the women's college basketball community is familiar with the University of Connecticut players. So, it should come to no surprise that senior point guard Moriah Jefferson is among the top players to watch in the tournament. Not only is she going for her record 4th championship along with Breanna Stewart and Morgan Tuck, but also she is one of the top point guards in the country. Stats don't do her justice as she not only impacts the game offensively but is a defensive force and makes opposing guards job's difficult. One of the big reasons behind UCONN winning the title will be because of Moriah Jefferson and her play.
1) Breanna Stewart, F, UCONN
So, who is the #1 player to watch in the NCAA tournament? It's none other than senior college star Breanna Stewart. Stewart who is chasing history is the #1 players to keep an eye on because of her ability to not only impact the game offensively but defensively. Her capabilities as a two-way player have allowed UCONN to be undefeated and her stats don't measure her true value because UCONN had so many blowouts in recent seasons. If UCONN wins their eleventh national title, it will have Breanna Stewart's fingerprints all over it. She has been the most dominant player for three straight years; UCONN could be prime for a four-peat if she gets it going.
