Calgary Wins First Clarkson Cup in Franchise History (CWHL/Chris Tanouye)

Ottawa, Ont - The 2016 Clarkson Cup has been won by the Calgary Inferno after defeating Les Canadiennes de Montreal, 8-3 in the Clarkson Cup final Sunday. The Canadian Tire Centre was jam packed with fans and the atmosphere was electric for this winner takes all matchup. Calgary made its first appearance in the Clarkson Cup one to remember taking down the three time champions, Montreal.

Calgary started the scoring early in the first period and set the tone for the rest of the game, this team was not going to back down. Rebecca Johnston worked her way into the attacking zone and scored 2:26 into the 1st giving Calgary a 1-0 lead. Montreal finished the season the hottest team in the league and had defeated the Inferno in the season series. Marie Philip-Poulin of Les Canadiennes would respond about 5 minutes later when on an individual effort she used the far side wing to shield her defender then snuck it by Delayne Brian to tie the score at one. Again the pressure would be put on the Inferno as Montreal started to pepper shots on net. The defense for Calgary was huge, blocking shots and creating offense from the point. Brianne Jenner would take a loose puck and work her team into the offense zone and score a late goal in the 1st to go into the intermission leading 2-1.

The second period saw plenty of action as Calgary using the momentum in the first came out firing on all cylinders. Jessica Campbell would start the scoring just 2:19 into the 2nd she got one past Charline Labonte and gave the Inferno a 3-1 lead over Les Canadiennes. Mid way through the 2nd Blayre Turnbull got the pass from Hayley Wickenheiser and capitalized beating Labonte and scoring the eventual game-winning goal. Montreal would get quality looks on Brian but she made some spectacular saves throughout the game to keep the leagues best offense in check. In the period Montreal outshot Calgary 18-9 but it would be the Inferno scoring three and taking a 5-2 advantage into the locker room.

The 3rd period would start with Les Canadiennes knowing they needed to find that offensive spark they had all season. Unfortunately, Calgary would not let that happen again within the first 6 minutes of the start of a period, Calgary would score first. Campbell would get her second of the game and increased the score to 6-2 over the former three time champs. Delayne Brian was called upon to make 38 saves on 41 shots and let the offense do the rest on Sunday night. The inferno scored 8 goals, only the second time this season they have put up eight or more. Brian would go on to win the Clarkson Cup MVP honors.

Congratulations to the 2016 Clarkson Cup Champions the Calgary Inferno
