Montreal - Les Canadiennes now control first place in the CWHL playoff race to the Clarkson Cup championship. Following a weekend sweep of the Brampton Thunder, Montreal cushioned its lead over both Brampton and Calgary.

On Saturday Les Canadiennes found themselves trailing late but showed why they are the favorites to the Cup. Montreal was down 3-1 in the second period before they mounted a comeback in the later periods to bring the game to overtime. Less than two minutes to play in the second period Ann-Sophie Bettez scored on the power play to cut the deficit to one going into the third period.

The first line for Les Canadiennes is one of the best in the CWHL if not the best; Marie-Philip Poulin, Caroline Ouellete and Bettez make up one forward line that any team would struggle to defend.

Brampton did a great job for two periods but the third belonged to Montreal. Poulin and her first line teammates would link on a rush five minutes into the third to tie the game at 3. Less than two minutes later Becca King gave the Thunder the lead sneaking through the defense and finding the back of the net off the assist from Laura Fortino. Late in the third, down one, Les Canadiennes on the penalty kill pulled their goalie and got the extra attacker. Cathy Chartrand would drive it past Erica Howe to tie the game with 28 seconds left.

The game would go to a shootout following a scoreless overtime period. Into the sixth round it went and Les Canadiennes would prevail completing the comeback to win 5-4 (1-0 SO)

On Sunday, Brampton motivated by the loss the night before came out ready for another battle. Both teams would put shots on net but Montreal clearly held the advantage and control the puck for the majority of the first. Poulin would open the scoring for Les Canadiennes but the Thunder would quickly respond with a goal from Rebecca Vint.

Montreal would use the second and third period to build a lead over the Thunder. Les Canadiennes would outshoot Brampton 29-14 in the later period and score four goals to lift them to a 5-2 victory. Montreal now hold a firm lead in first place and with matchups against the Blades and Inferno the team can only pad their lead going in to the Clarkson Cup playoffs.

Montreal earns sweep over Brampton 5-4 OT/SO, 5-2.
