Saturday, Angelique Kerber upset Serena Williams in a 6-4 3-6 6-4 thriller to open the 2016 WTA Season. Kerber, motivated by Steffi Graf prevented Williams of a historic 22nd title at a major that would have actually tied Steffi Graf for the Open Era lead.

Angelique Kerber took the first set after battling to break Serena, but Williams regained her composure and took the second set. Kerber proved her worth against the world #1 Serena Williams and for the second straight major Williams suffered another huge upset. The 2015 US Open may sting more for Serena, but the win by Kerber last night definitely ranks among those to be mentioned in history.

Kerber came into the match 1-5 against Williams and lost the last four since an upset in Cincinnati in 2012. Williams was 21-4 in Grand Slam finals and had taken time off following the loss to Roberta Vinci in the US Open semis. Serena had dominated her way through the tournament up until this finals match up with Kerber.

An incredible match saw Williams strike 47 winners, compared with 25 for Kerber. But the biggest difference for Serena was her unusually high unforced error count, Williams misplayed 46 balls in the match while her counterpart only made 13. Williams, who is arguably the best server in tennis, struggled with the serve only getting only 53% of the first serve in, allowing Kerber to set up Williams on multiple shots late.

Talking to reporter following the match, Serena said, “Every time I walk into this room, everyone expects me to win every single match,” "As much as I would like to be a robot, I'm not. I try to…I do the best I can!”

Williams has been a staple in the game for a long time, and after last season and her start to the Australian Open expectations have only risen. Kerber is a rising star who many people don’t know but her game has improved tremendously over the past four years. This is Kerbers first major grand slam title, and it will be one she will remember forever.

"My phone is exploding right now," said Kerber, who will rise to second in the rankings. "I don't know how many messages I got. It's amazing."
