What's Going On in Stamford? Jake Mastel Resigns.
On Thursday night news broke that head coach, Jake Mastel of the first place Connecticut Whale has stepped down and reisigned as head coach of the team. The Whale are still looking for their third general manager in only the first season of the teams existence and now add to that search one for a new head coach.
The NWHL has yet to release a statement officially announcing the resignation Mastel and nothing from the Whale camp as well. Current GM is league COO George Spiers who took over for Harry Rosenholtz who resigned citing personal reasons in December of 2015. Rosenholtz was also a replacement GM for Chris Ardito who resigned from the position during the free agency period before the inaugural season.
It is hard to figure out what is going on in Connecticut, the team sits atop the NWHL standings and has a strong teams up and down the roster. On Wednesday, the Whale traded away goaltender Chelsea Laden for Shenae Lundberg of the New York Riveters. The organization started the year undefeated and has only loss two games all year, both to the Boston Pride.
This weekend the Whale host the Pride in the first game since the All-Star break and with an acting head coach and general manager some would question how long can this team stay afloat with a struggling front office. Well with all the great "firsts" that have been we can't expect everything to go smoothly. Now I do question how any team in any league can go through three GM's before the season is over, and now struggle to find a head coach that can continue the chemistry on this team.
The league has yet to release any information on the resignation, credit to Kate Cimini of Today's Slapshot for breaking the story but this leaves a lot of questions unanswered. It will be interesting to hear the leagues response, but with all that has happened in CT the question will remain is this a league issue or organizational issue?
